Kung Fu Kendra, Author: Inside 13 Books and Counting

Wing Chun Magazine, Issue 7

Most people meet Sifu Kendra Mahon through a screen: a lesson, a podcast episode, a clip of a form. A growing number now meet her on the page. Known to students around the world as Kung Fu Kendra, she is a Wing Chun master and an author, with 13 books and counting.

For Kendra, writing is another way to open the door. A student in a town with no Wing Chun school can still read the history of the art, the thinking behind each form and the lives of the people who carried it. Her books sit alongside her teaching rather than replacing it: the forms are learned on your feet, and the books explain why they matter.

The Way of Wing Chun

Her ten-book series, The Way of Wing Chun, follows the system from its ideas to its weapons:

  • The Philosophy of Wing Chun: the centerline, simplicity and the straight path.
  • The History of Wing Chun: from the legends of the burning temple and the Red Boats to Foshan and the wider world.
  • The Life of Ip Man: the real man behind the legend, from Foshan to Hong Kong.
  • The Philosophy of Siu Lim Tao: why Wing Chun begins by standing still.
  • The Philosophy of Chum Kiu: turning, stepping and seeking the bridge.
  • The Philosophy of Biu Jee: losing the center, and the way back.
  • The Philosophy of the Muk Yan Jong: lessons from the wooden dummy, the training partner that never lies.
  • The Philosophy of the Luk Dim Boon Kwan: the long pole, deep roots and the half point.
  • The Philosophy of the Baat Jaam Dao: the butterfly knives and the art of letting go.
  • Chi Sau: The Art of Sensitivity: listening through the arms and staying in contact.

Masters of Kung Fu

A second series looks at the people behind the legends. Bruce Lee: The Philosopher Behind the Fist explores Lee’s life, his Wing Chun roots and his ideas, told from inside the William Cheung line. Wong Fei-hung: The Healer Behind the Legend tells the story of the physician, Hung Gar master and lion dancer who became the most filmed hero in Chinese cinema.

Kendra is also the author of Push Your Way Through, and more books are in development.

Where to Start

New to Wing Chun? Start with The Philosophy of Wing Chun. If you love history, read The History of Wing Chun and The Life of Ip Man. If you are already training a form, read its book alongside your practice. If you have started chi sau, Chi Sau: The Art of Sensitivity was written for you.
