Breaking Down the Walls: Sifu Kendra Mahon’s Mission to Make Wing Chun Accessible to All

Wing Chun Magazine, Issue 7 cover story

For most of its history, Wing Chun came with walls. You had to live in the right city, find the right school, be accepted by the right teacher, and then wait, sometimes for years, before the deeper parts of the system were shown to you. Sifu Kendra Mahon, the Wing Chun master and author known to students around the world as Kung Fu Kendra, has spent more than a decade taking those walls down, one at a time.

“I love this art too much to keep it locked away,” she has written. This issue is about what that looks like in practice.

Where It Started

Kendra began training in 2005 at the Canadian Wing Chun Kung Fu Academy. She teaches Traditional Wing Chun as it was passed down to her by Master Brian Lewadny, who learned it from Grandmaster William Cheung. Grandmaster Cheung trained under Ip Man in Hong Kong, alongside Bruce Lee.

She earned her way through the Traditional Wing Chun sash system to the purple sash, Master level. In 2012 she founded Kung Fu Kendra and the Global Kung Fu Alliance in Calgary, Canada, with a simple idea behind both: if someone wants to learn real Wing Chun, they should be able to.

Wall One: Where You Live

The first wall is geography. For many people, the honest answer to “where can I learn Wing Chun?” used to be “nowhere near you.” There was no qualified school within driving distance, and no structured way to learn without one.

Kendra’s answer was to teach the complete system online, properly. Her Become a Sifu Wing Chun Online Certification Course takes students from their first stance to Sifu certification over 10 levels. Students train in living rooms, garages and backyards across North America, Europe and beyond, and a local school is no longer the deciding factor.

Wall Two: The Hidden Curriculum

The second wall is secrecy. Many students describe years of training without knowing what comes next, or why. Key material was held back for an inner circle.

In Kendra’s course, nothing is hidden. Every one of the 10 levels is laid out openly. Each ends with a graded exam: students film their forms and techniques, complete a written test and receive personal feedback from Sifu Kendra herself. The next level opens when they pass. Promotion is earned through tested skill, not time served or fees paid.

Wall Three: The Cost

The third wall is money. Monthly fees add up over the years it takes to learn a complete martial art, and for many people that cost decides whether they can train at all.

The certification course is one payment, with no monthly fees and lifetime access. Students who train every day can move quickly; students with jobs, families and shift work can take the time they need without paying more for it.

Wall Four: “You’re Not the Right Kind of Student”

Too old. Too small. Not athletic enough. The wrong gender for a fighting art. Kendra has heard every version of it from students who were turned away, or who never walked in the door.

Wing Chun was built on structure, timing and efficiency, not size and strength, and its own origin story begins with a woman. That is why Kendra’s students include people who were told they had started too late, or were the wrong size for it. Students without a training partner use solo drills she designed to build the same skills.

Wall Five: A First Step That Costs Nothing

You should be able to try Wing Chun before you commit to anything. Kendra offers a free Sil Lim Tao video class that walks through the first form step by step, a free Siu Lim Tao eBook, and a library of free lessons on WingChunReviews.com with no sign-up. Her books (13 books and counting, including The Way of Wing Chun series) and the Kung Fu Kendra Podcast carry the same teaching to people who are still deciding.

Teacher and Author

Kendra is also an author, with 13 books and counting. Her ten-book series, The Way of Wing Chun, covers the philosophy, history and forms of the art, from Siu Lim Tao to the butterfly knives and chi sau. Her Masters of Kung Fu series tells the stories of Bruce Lee and Wong Fei-hung. For a reader with no school nearby, a book can be the first door into the art. See all of her books.

In Her Mother’s Name

The scholarship that sits at the heart of the Global Kung Fu Alliance is personal. The Bonnie Atkins Memorial Scholarship is named for Kendra’s mother, a nurse for 30 years who raised three daughters on her own and spent her last days raising money for people in need.

Four times a year, the scholarship gives free access to Level 1 of the certification course to an Alliance member who has shown selfless acts in the world of kung fu and beyond. It is one more door held open, in the spirit of the woman who taught Kendra what helping others looks like.

Tradition Without the Walls

Opening the doors does not mean watering the art down. Lineage still matters to Kendra: it is how Wing Chun keeps its integrity from one generation to the next. The difference is how it is used. In her view, lineage should be a source of quality, never a reason to keep people out.

Wing Chun does not belong to a few schools, a few cities or a few kinds of people. It belongs to anyone willing to train with patience, respect and consistency. For a long time the doors stayed closed. Sifu Kendra Mahon is opening them.
