Dejan Mikic: The Vanguard of Traditional Wing Chun in Europe

Sifu Dejan Mikic stands as one of the first masters of Traditional Wing Chun (TWC) in Europe, boasting nearly 30 years of expertise and unwavering dedication to the discipline. His journey began at a pivotal moment for Chinese martial arts in the Balkans, as TWC started to gain traction thanks to the pioneering work of earlier masters and influential seminars conducted by legendary figures like Grandmaster William Cheung and Master David Cheung. Sifu Mikic, alongside other passionate instructors, facilitated the spread of TWC throughout Serbia and former Yugoslavia, nurturing a strong foundation for the art in the region and bringing together practitioners from diverse backgrounds.

Through decades of teaching, Sifu Mikic became a driving force behind the Traditional Wing Chun Kung Fu Federation of Serbia—a thriving federation that now encompasses more than 20 schools across the country. Under his leadership, the Federation has not only grown in numbers but has become widely recognized for its dedication to authenticity, quality instruction, and cultural exchange. Major national and regional martial arts events regularly feature his students, with the Federation being honored multiple times for excellence and contribution to the martial arts community.

Sifu Mikic’s commitment extends beyond Serbia's borders. Today, he represents GM David Cheung's TWC Association for all of Europe, creating unity and high standards among TWC schools throughout the continent. This role demands both technical mastery and diplomatic vision, as he serves as a bridge between European instructors and the venerable TWC lineage traced directly to the founders in China and their descendants. His efforts have led to international seminars and participation in organizations that recognize the Federation as a key institution for the spread of Chinese martial arts culture.

Not only is Sifu Mikic respected for his technical prowess and leadership, but he is also known for his ability to blend the art’s philosophical depth with practical application for modern students. Whether instructing beginners or guiding experienced practitioners, his teaching style is marked by patience, insight, and a profound respect for Wing Chun tradition.

Sifu Dejan Mikic is distinguished not only as one of the first Traditional Wing Chun masters in Europe, but also as a member of the esteemed Global Kung Fu Alliance, affirming his connection to a worldwide community of dedicated martial artists. His reputation for high-level skill and Federation leadership is paralleled by his pioneering role in modern Wing Chun education—he has been featured in the world's first and only Online Wing Chun Certification Course, created by Sifu Kendra Mahon. In this acclaimed course, Sifu Mikic appears as a co-teacher, working alongside Sifu Mahon to demonstrate advanced forms and techniques on the Wooden Dummy. This innovative platform has expanded access to authentic Wing Chun training across the globe, further establishing Sifu Mikic as a prominent figure in both tradition and innovation within the art.

In his nearly 30 years of devotion to Traditional Wing Chun, Sifu Dejan Mikic has shaped the future of TWC in Europe, raising generations of martial artists and solidifying the cultural legacy of Wing Chun Kung Fu for years to come.

Here is Master Dejan's Complete Bio:

Master Mikić Dejan has greatly contributed to the development and affirmation of Wing Chun Kung Fu skills, once in Yugoslavia, today in Serbia. He was born on September 3, 1967, in Požarevac, where he still lives and works. He took his first steps in Wing Chun at Božidar Gaberšek's school in 1983, and a few years later became his student and was among the first in our country to be taught the original version of Wing Chun, which at that time was a secret even for most European countries. While practicing the Wing Tsun Leung Ting System of Master Leung Ting, he reached the 7th degree, and he perfected his further education at numerous seminars with the great names of Kung Fu such as: Leung Ting, David Cheung and William Cheung.

Together with master Dušan Radojković, in 1992, he opened the first school of original Wing Chun in Požarevac, and soon after focused his work on spreading and propagating Wing Chun throughout the country. He is the initiator and founder of the TWCKF Federation of Yugoslavia, as well as the founder of the TWCKF club Požarevac. He held seminars and examinations in all clubs of the Alliance in our country, the Republic of Srpska, Macedonia and Austria.

He organized the seminars of Božidar Gaberšek, as well as the big seminar of William Cheung. He is the president of the Society of Friends of China from Požarevac, which organizes numerous exhibitions in cooperation with the Embassy of the People's Republic of China.

He was elected vice president of the TWCKF Federation of Yugoslavia. Grand Master William Cheung and Master Božidar Gaberšek appointed him, together with his colleague Dušan Radojković, to the position of chief instructor of the WWCKFA for Yugoslavia, and he is also the chief instructor of the TWCKFS of Yugoslavia. Mikić Dejan and Radojković Dušan are the first master rank holders in Yugoslavia after Master Gaberšek.

At the beginning of his mission, he organized Master Gaberšek's seminars in Požarevac from 1993 to 2002.

He is the organizer of the seminar of Grandmaster William Cheung (better known as a student of the legendary Yip Man and teacher of the famous Bruce Lee) in 1995 in Požarevac. Next year, in cooperation with the Society of Friends of China, he organizes the Wushu Games, one of the largest manifestations of Chinese martial arts in Europe, in which about 300 practitioners from more than 20 clubs from the country participate. The games were held under the auspices of the Ministry of Sports and Youth and the Chinese Embassy, whose representatives attended in large numbers. The Chinese ambassador awards the gold medal of the Chinese Decade of Culture to the Požarevac club.

In the same year, Mikić attends Grandmaster William Cheung's seminar in Skopje, where he improves his knowledge. He also organizes a seminar with Master Gaberšek in Skopje, in special units and at the police academy. Thanks to this seminar, Wing Chun skill becomes an official part of Macedonian police training, on an equal footing with other martial arts among the first countries in Europe.

In Požarevac, he founds the Society of Friends of China, of which he is the president, and becomes the initiator and founder of societies in all clubs within the future Alliance.
